Welcome to Class 1
Our teacher Miss Yeomans teaches us during the week, alongside Mrs Robbins and Mr Rose.
Class 1 is where the fun happens! Every day is set up by our teachers to make sure we enjoy our learning and make the most of the exciting indoor and outdoor learning space at our disposal!
Exploration and play are at the heart of our learning in EYFS. We define our own day, steering our own learning whilst exploring and playing in the amazing setting that we have at Barlow. We learn to develop physically, emotionally, and socially before moving on to expressing ourselves through Art and Design, developing confidence in Literacy and Maths and learning to understand our world. In EYFS, we love exploring and learning, becoming confident, resilient, and curious learners, ready for anything!
In Reception, Miss Yeomans helps us to develop our core skills in reading, writing and maths. We have adult-directed sessions in phonics, handwriting and maths across the week, where we begin to link sounds to letters, read and write meaningful sentences and apply our number and shape knowledge in real-life scenarios.
By the time we start in Year 1, we are keen to learn more formally and tackle the National Curriculum with enthusiasm. Our teachers enable us to work in a practical, hands-on, and collaborative manner to make sure that learning is still fun and engaging. We move on to learn about alternative pronunciations of graphemes in phonics which helps us, in turn, to read fluently and spell accurately. We are given plenty of opportunities to apply our maths skills to problem-solving and real-life scenarios. Alongside all this, we tackle the wider curriculum through our topic, which is always inspired by our own interests, observed by the teachers in the previous term. As the oldest children in Class 1, we are given plenty of responsibility to take care of our environment and lead the smaller children in their learning.
In Class 1, we are very passionate about the outdoors, and you will see us outside in all weathers, wrapped up in winter and with our sun hats on in summer! We enrich our learning outdoors and are encouraged to learn through exploration, investigation, and enquiry, using play and imagination to develop socially, emotionally, and physically.
We are a happy and friendly class, always welcoming parents, and carers to come and talk to us and see how we learn here at Barlow. In EYFS we encourage families to engage with our ‘Learning Journey’ which begins at the start of Nursery using ‘Tapestry’. Here we celebrate all the achievements at school, and we give the opportunity for families to add other achievements outside of school.
Every half term families receive a curriculum newsletter which explains the focus for the term and a little bit more about how our families can support this at home.
